Why buy a new freezer?
Freezers have become more economical to run. Since refrigeration appliances have to be switched on constantly, and should last for many years, it is important to consider more energy efficient freezers as the savings can be great over the life of the machine.
New machines are labelled with their energy efficiency, A (the best) to C. Assess the cost per day (by means of the energy consumption (kilowatt hours (kW)) and cost of each kW (from the electricity bill). (Multiply by 365 for cost per year).
More economical machines, with improved insulation and temperature control systems are introduced every year.
Larger models are economical by having double (instead of the usual single) door - preventing cold air escaping, and maintaining constant temperature
There are four main types of freezer:-
- upright (tall upright freezer & fridge freezer),
- chest - top-opening with baskets instead of shelves, often larger capacity than upright freezers,
- worktop / table top-height freezers.
- Built in / freestanding freezers
Freezer temperature
Freezers have a four-star rating, ensuring that the temperature is at least -18°C, and food can be stored safely for 3-12 months.
Some models can operate at -26°C - ideal for fast-freezing fresh food, maintaining texture and goodness.
**** Freeze fresh food, and store for 3 - 12 months (less than -18oC
*** Store pre-frozen food for up to 3 - 12 months (-18o C)
** Store pre-frozen food for up to a month (-12oC)
* Store pre-frozen food up to a week (-6oC)
zero stars Only suitable for making ice
Useful features:
- compartment doors, to minimise escape of cold air
- transparent drawers, for easy finding of items
- fast-freeze, to maintain shape and goodness of fresh food
- warning light/alarm of increase in temperature
- lock (mainly on chest freezers)
