Renault Mégane Convertible

There are many reasons why the latest Renault Mégane range is storming up the sales chart, but one of them must be the huge range of engines available to suit every taste. In addition to the award-winning four dCi diesel engines, the four petrol engines range in power from 98hp to a scorching 225hp turbo engine found only in the Renaultsport versions of the hatchbacks. Now it's the turn of the Coupé-Cabriolet, Scénic and Grand Scénic to receive a range-topping high performance engine - this time a 165hp version of the two-litre turbo. And for those that find the Renaultsport a little too hot to handle, this new engine is also available in the Hatch and three-door Sport Hatch.

When fitted to the Hatch, the new turbo petrol engine has a top speed of 137mph, 0-62mph time of 8.3 secs, 165hp at 5,000rpm and maximum torque of 270Nm at 3,250rpm, allowing discerning drivers to combine serious performance with everyday practicality in the hot new versions of Europe's best-selling car last year. Developed from the naturally aspirated 2.0 16V engine, it employs a specially devised "twin scroll" turbocharger whose technology improves efficiency by limiting the degree to which exhaust gas can be re-aspirated, thus optimising the filling of the cylinder with fresh air and gives instant, smooth power delivery.

Whilst performance is naturally improved over the standard 2-litre 136hp engine, the new powerplant still has excellent fuel economy of 26.6 mpg (urban), 47.1 mpg (extra-urban) and 36.7 mpg (combined). In the case of the Mégane Hatch, Sport Hatch and Coupé-Cabriolet, the introduction of the turbocharger has actually improved fuel consumption and emissions. The Mégane Hatch for example returns 36.7mpg on a combined cycle - an increase of 1.4 over its normally aspirated brother, while emissions fall by 7g/km to 184.

The new models are fitted with a six-speed gearbox, Thatcham category 1 alarm and immobiliser, remote central locking, deadlocking, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) free for a limited period, and are visually differentiated from their lesser-powered siblings by way of a subtle, silver 2.0T badge on each model's side strips.

On sale now, prices for the various models start from £15,090 on the road and all including free Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) worth £750
